There are 5 main criteria to consider
when you are shopping for your new bed:
1- Sleepers independance
The stronger the sleepers independance, the less your feel the movements
of your partner sleeping next to you.
2- Suspension unit quality:
spring, foam or latex
We recommend that you keep your current sleeping habits so that
you don't have to get accustomed with a new suspension unit type.
Therefore, if you are currently sleeping on a spring mattress, choose
a new spring mattree. If you are currently sleeping on a foam/latex
mattress, choose a similar mattress.
We call the first sensation of comfort when you lie down the "primary
comfort". It lasts for approximately 10 minutes.
The fillings are all the fabric materials between the suspension
unit and you. To the eye, a soft and comfortable mattress will look
"puffy". The softness of the fillings depends on the materials:
wool, cotton, silk, foam...
4-
Firmness
The choice of firmness
depends on your morphology (size and weight), as illustrated in the
grid below:

5- Mattress size
- As far as the length is concerned, you must take
your size into consideration. To avoid having your feet hanging
out of the bed, choose a mattress that is at least 15cm longer than
you (and choose a 200cm mattress when you're taller than 175 cm)
- The width is also an important factor for the
quality of your nights. Remember that you turn around an average
of 40 times in your sleep!
A child sleeps in a 90x190cm (3'x6'3'') bed. Logically, as adults
we should sleep in a 180cm (6') wide bed, shouldn't we? We recommend
that you stay off the standard double bed (only 135cm wide) and
choose at least a king size bed, that is 150cm wide.

SPRING UNIT SUSPENSION
There exist 3 types of spring units that each have their own characteristics.
Their quality depends on the number of springs and the spring gauge.
As far as the number of springs is concerned, the more springs,
the more spread the pressure of the body is; therefore you benefit
from a superior comfort. Your mattress will last longer as less
pressure will be applied on the springs.
The number of springs also depends on the type of spring unit. In
a double open coil mattress, there are between 299 and 336 springs;
in a pocketed spring mattress, between 600 and 2000.
The firmness of the mattress depends on the spring gauge. The thicker
the diametre of the spring, the firmer the mattress.
-
OPEN COIL SPRINGS
The open coil spring system is known as the Traditional Bonnell
spring unit. An open coil spring unit is made up of rows of hour-glass
shaped springs which are joined to neighbouring springs by a small
wire.
Its reaction is proprtional to the pressure applied on the stucture.
Therefore it can adapt to all kinds of heights and weights.
It has got a long lifetime and the air circulates making it unfriendly
for dustmites.
To alter the firmness of the mattress different gauge wires are
used- 12.5g for a firmer feel and 13g for a softer feel. Open coil
mattresses provide a firmer than average sleeping surface. If there
isn’t a big weight difference between you and your partner
then open coil mattresses offer great value for money.
-
CONTINUOUS SPRING SYSTEM
Silentnight’s mattresses employ a system called “Miracoil”
that runs continuously from the head to the foot of the mattress.
This means that the springs cannot fall through a slatted base,
and therefore ensures total support for the full life of the bed.
The Miracoil system also offers a “no roll together”
guarantee, which means that the spring unit absorbs your body weight
evenly up and down the bed. This means you are less likely to disturb
your partner at night. The Miracoil spring system means a long mattress
lifetime, and represents good value for money.
-
POCKETED SPRINGS
Pocket spring mattresses are the best quality spring mattresses
money can buy. Each spring is individually pocketed in a textile
case. As the springs move independently, a restless sleeper is less
likely to disturb his or her partner as movement is not translated
throughout the entire mattress. The springs help the mattress mould
to the contours of the body, giving complete and even support exactly
where you need it.
Properties of independance and support are better than in a continuous
wire spring system.
The spring count generally determines the comfort of the mattress,
between 1000 and 1800 springs in a double mattress is the most common,
although double layer pocket spring mattresses can contain anything
up to 3000 springs. Double layer or “double-decker”
spring units give extra depth and softness to a mattress. Manufacturers
often combine pocket springs with visco (memory) foam or latex,
which enhance the qualities of both products.
•
FOAM/LATEX SUSPENSION
If you choose a foam/latx mattress, you must take into account the
type of foam and the depth of the mattress.
The main advantage of foam/latex is that they mould to the contour
of your body and keep your spine straight while you sleep.
The firmness of the foam depends on its density (that itself varies
according to the type of foam). In order to compare densities, we
recommend you to read our product descriptions and our buying guides.
-
REFLEX FOAM
This higly resilient foam is of superior quality and is more suitable
to sleep than a regular foam. Its density is traditionally around
35kg/m³.
The core of memory foam mattresses are made out of reflex foam.
-
VISCO ELASTIC MEMORY FOAM
Visco elastic was developed by NASA in the 1970s to better cushion
astronauts against the forces experienced during take off and landing.
Visco reacts to the weight and heat of your body to precisely mould
to its changing contours as you sleep. Sleeping on conventional
mattresses we sometimes suffer from pressure points during the night
that cause us to stir, and reposition ourselves. The highly supportive
enveloping properties of visco foam will alleviate any pressure
points or areas with poor circulation. This reduces the amount of
times you will awaken, allowing you to get a deeper, more relaxing
nights sleep, with longer “sleep cycles”. Visco foam
offers excellent sleeper independence as the foam absorbs movement,
meaning that you are unlikely to wake your partner by stirring in
the night. Manufacturers often combine visco with pocket springs;
this offers excellent comfort and support as both technologies have
excellent qualities, and complement each other well. C'est une mousse
de polyuréthane viscoélastique à mémoire
de forme, à très haute résilience.
Its density varies between 78 and 85 kg/m³.
-
LATEX
Latex mattresses offer a level of comfort and feel unlike any
other mattress available today. Latex is a naturally-occurring derivative
of hevea sap. It has the exceptional ability to dynamically conform
to your body's every move throughout the night, so that you are
assured complete support in any position. Latex foam mattresses
significantly reduce pressure points, which can mean less tossing
and turning throughout the night. Manufacturers often combine latex
with pocket springs. This offers great comfort and support as both
technologies have excellent qualities, and complement each other
well.
The density usually varies between 75 and 83 kg/m³.

BUNK BEDS AND GUEST BEDS
Mattresses for bunk and guest
beds are usually made out of regular foam, because they are designed
for children. Unlike traditional single mattresses (90x190cm), mattresses
for bunk and guest beds are usually a little smaller (width and
length), as well as thinner. We invite you to take all this information
into consideration.
Bunk beds allow to save a lot of space when two people are sleeping.
It is ideal for children, or small student rooms.
Guest beds and Captain beds
have a secondary mattress under the main mattress, that lies on a
folding base, or inside a large drawer that you can pull.
•
MATTRESS TOPPERS
A mattress topper is
a thick layer of fabric or of foam that you can place on your mattress
to increase the comfort for your bed.
The most popular ones are memory foam mattress toppers. They allow
you to upgrade your mattress and limit your investment. However, do
not put a mattress topper on a mattress that is too old, as the topper
will be damaged.
•
STANDARD DIVAN BASES
There are three groups of standard divan bases: platform top, sprung
edge and slatted bases. When choosing the type of base, make sure
it is compatible with your mattress.
Most of our divans are available in various storage options.
Head boards are an optional extra.
- PLATFORM
TOP DIVAN BASES
The platform
top divan gives a firmer, more responsive feel to the mattress.
It is made of 2 or 3 strong wooden bars that run accross the length
of the base to ensure a strong support. Then a cardboard top lies
on them, to help and spread the support.
- SPRUNG
EDGE DIVAN BASES
The sprung edge version has a layer of springs atop the base which
add a cushioned affect to your mattress. A sprung edge divan is also
said to add to the lifetime of a mattress.
- SLATTED BASES
Slat bases, like platform top, give a firmer feel to the mattress.
The slats can be directly fixed on the frame or on rubber plastics
for a softer feel.
You can also opt for a decorative
bedsteads. Please read our buying guide for bed frames.
•
ADJUSTABLE BASES
Adjustable bases can
be raised at the head and the foot ends (manually or
electrically). They are ideal for those who like to
spend time in bed (to read, watch TV, relax or have
breakfast...) Adjustable mattresses can be put on any
base. They have the ability to bend to follow the movements
of the base.
Here
are the criteria that will help you choose between different
adjustable products:
- The number of sections : 5 sections
will give you more possibility than 3 sections. It all
depends on your needs.
- The speed of your adjustable bed depends
on whether you opt for an electrical base. The latter
one will expand the range of postitioning.
- The support quality, depends on the
structure of the mattress: spring, foam or latex. None
is better than another. Your comfort depends on your sleeping
habits.
-
MANUAL
Manual ajustable beds allow you to raise the head end
of the bed, so you can be in a sitting position. Legs
can also be raised in order to facilitate blood circulation.
-
ELECTRICAL
Elecrtical adjustable beds offer more freedom in the choice
of positions you are looking for.
•
FUTONS
A futon is a mattress made
after Japanese technique, laying on a wooden frame. This gives
a Zen style to the room.
The mattress folds in half (1 fold accross the
length of the mattress). The mattress is usually thick (around
20 cm deep) and it can be used for an everyday usage (although
we recommend a real bed for a daily use).
•
SOFAS AND SOFABEDS
Buying a sofa is a matter of personal design taste, and sometimes
it feels you must make your decision between dozens of couches
available. We will help you narrow your choice down to a small
selection that best suits your needs.
- SOFABEDS
They are ideal if you want
to save space, or you just want that extra sleeping space
for when you have guests.
The mecanism is made out of 2 folds, and
support the mattress with wood slats or taught fabric.
Mattresses are usually thin, 5 to 6 cm, so
that it can fold properly. Therefore it is not for an everyday
use.

FAQ
MATTRESSES
Your questions:
Our answers:
What's
the difference between a spring mattress and a foam/latex mattress?
It's above
all up to your sleeping habits: one is not particularly better than
the other.
But, they do differ: a foam mattress tends to sink in at first, mold
to the contour of your body and absorb body movements; where a spring
mattress has a resilience effect (bouncing back to its original shape)
which gives a firmer first feel, although later in the night the mattress
will mold to the contour of your body.
We advise to go on with the type of beds you are used to. e.g. if
you've slept for 20 years on spring mattresses, carry on using them.
You can get a fell for the foam by buying a mattress with foam type
fillings on top of the spring unit.
Does
the depth of my mattress influence its quality?
Do not
mistake depth for quality. It depends on what is used to make your
mattress deeper. Usually, spring mattresses are thicker than latex
or visco foam ones, because of the thickness of any spring (which
doesn't mean it's better). If two mattresses uses the same suspension
unit (pocket springs, open coil springs, Miracoil, latex, foam, visco)and
are from the same brand, very often, the thicker the better the comfort
and the lifetime.
Is
a firm mattress better for my back?
This is a common belief that has
no justification. The firmness must be above adatped to your morphology,
your built. If it's too firm, your back will over-arch your spinal
column, which proves has bad in the long run has a mattress that is
too soft (opposite effect..
Choose a mattress that is adapted to both of you. If one is clearly
stronger than the other, then buy a mattress that is for the stronger
but enhance the quality of the fillings in your search criteria.
Are
there sheets for all sizes of mattress?
Yes. Bedeezee offers you a large
range of accessories for all mattress sizes (including flat sheets,
fitted sheets, duvet covers, pillow cases, protection...). You can
even get made to measure sheets. Contact our sales advisors for a
quote.
Are
there special mattresses for babies ?
Yes. Bedeezee has selected for the
youngest a number of products that fit with all security standards
and regulations. You have a choice of spring or foam mattresses which
all take into account ventilation and breathability.
What's
the point of using adjustable beds?
It's a unique experience: you can
read and/or watch TV while really relaxing. The fact that you can
adjust the shape of the bed allows perfect blood flow and spinal column
support, whatever your activity. If you sleep, you can have your legs
up a bit, improving blood flow at night. All in all, adjustability
is a great plus, especially if you like to stay in bed after or before
actually sleeping.
What
about waterbeds?
It's a trend that came from the US.
Today in the UK, none of the biggest manufacturers has launched a
product of that type. It's usually rather expensive and not necessarily
very durable. Obviously comfort is very specific. IF you#re tempted,
be aware that there is quite a lot of maintenance (changing the water,
heating it up), that you cannot mie it without emptying it and that
it uses quite a lot of energy to heat the water for sleeping. None
are part of our selection today for those reasons.
THE
DIVAN BASE
Should
I change the divan base at the same time as I change my mattress?
Yes, because laying a new mattress
on an old base limits its lifetime by a third. Indeed, the base accounts
for a third of the total support of a bed, an old one will not fill
this role anymore. You might also consider that using an old base
can motivate a warranty refusal for the new mattress.
Can
I lay my mattress on the ground?
No, if so, you will take out an important
part of the support qualities of your mattress. Also you will limit
the hygiene and ventilation of your mattress (on the ground, flooring,
carpets and rugs are usually full of dustmites). Therefore it is really
not recommended to use a mattress on the ground, and you might affect
your warranty rights by doing so.
Will
my base be in two parts?
All bases in small double, double,
king and super king sizes will be delivered in two parts. It's an
industry standard for all products manufactured in the UK. All bases
in single and small single will be in one part though.
BED AND BEDDING
IN A SHOP
How
much time do I need to try out a bed?
Trying
a bed a couple of minutes in a store with your clothes and your
shoes on, people around and a salesperson looking at you is not
the ideal condition to gauge whether you will sleep comfortably.
At the best, you will notice differences in support. But the quality
of sleep and comfort can only be appreciated once you have spent
a few nights on your bed.
Why
can't I find on your website a reference I found in another shop?
Every bed manufacturer develops
specific products for each retailer and their different type of
customers. Therefore, a Sealy Posturpedic mattress that you find
in a high street shop will probably different from another found
in a giant supermarket. In order to compare products, you need to
compare technical specifications (number of springs, depth, fillings
quality, etc)
CARING
FOR YOUR MATTRESS AND YOUR BED
How
do I care for my mattress?
During the first couple of months,
try to turn your mattress regularly (every two weeks) to spread
the weight at first and avoid early settlement..
Then, you can use the 4 seasons :
- Spring: start position.
- Summer : rotate head to toe.
- Autumn : change sides of the mattress (if turnable)
- Winter : rotate head to toe again
Do not use the handles to carry the mattress as their role is rather
simply for repositionning on the base.
To wash your mattress you can use a hoover or gently rub stains
with water and soap.
Turn
and no turn mattresses: what should I choose?
Today, 50% of the mattresses are
non turn. Which means that you will not need to change sides twice
a year. This feature is often related to the fillings used in the
mattress (visco foam is a good example) as some of them will not
stand the pressure on the base side of the mattress. Sometimes the
mattress is designed that way to ensure convenience.
We do not recommend one type in particular, it's more a question
fillings you want (and feelings of course).
How
to protect my mattress?
To ensure correct hygiene, it is
highly recommended to use protection. When you know an average sleeper
sweats 40cl per night, this makes a lot of sense. Our advice is to
buy the protection at the same time as the bed.
How
long will my mattress last?
A bed is supposed to last ten years
maximum. After that , it is highly recommended to change for a new
one, independantly of how well you feel in it and how your bed looks.
Looks can be deceptive... Your bed directly relates to your health
and your energy levels. And keeping it for too long (as well as the
base) can have a amazing impact on your life. Because the bed alters
very slowly, you will never have a sudden wake up call telling you
it's time to change, you will even get used to the flaws of your bed.
But if you think back at how well you slept when you first bought
it and see a difference, it might be time to consider a change...
How
to transport my mattress?
It is not really recommended to fold
a sprung mattress so be careful when you transport it to keep it straight
(on the side is the best as this avoids damaging the springs with
the rest of your packing). Foam and latex mattresses are foldable
(although if the drive is long it's also recommended to keep it straight).
Beware! The handles on mattresses are not there for transport. Their
role is to help you reposition the mattress on its bases if needed.
If you use it to vcarry the mattress through stairs it could break
(and handles are not guaranteed)
How
to clean my mattress?
All mattress covers are today trated
against dustmites and bacteries to ensure better hygiene. In case
you stain the mattress, it is advised not to use any chemical products.
Just use a cotton cloth with water and gently rub the stain in circular
movements (you don't want to spread the stain). If it's just a dust
stain, brush it lightly. Ideally, as soon as you buy your mattress,
you use protection for it and you won't have that issue.
What
about dustmites?
Dustmites are parasites that develop
in every humid and obscur areas of a house (carpets, non vented mattresses).
They are often the source of allergies. Invisible to the normal eye,
dustmite feed partly on the dead skin we leave behind us. Approximately
15% of the population is estimated to be allergic to dustmites. Itching
and ashtma are the usual symptoms and consequences of this allergy.
To fight against their proliferation, vent your room and keep it clean
and clear: hoover regularly, in particular, carefully monitor humidity
levels (beware of too much heating), dry clean blankets, quilts and
pillows, try to avoid rugs and carpets in your bedroom. In addition
to that you can use anti allergy bed protection and anti dustmite
sprays..
