It is highly recommended to have a divan base
or a bedstead under your mattress. Indeed, if you put your mattress
direclty onto the floor, it will undermine your comfort and the mattress's
lifetime.
There exist standard bases, adjustable (electrical) bases, practical
bases... here is a buying guide to help you make your decision.
•
STANDARD DIVAN BASES
There are three groups of standard divan bases: platform top,
sprung edge and slatted bases. When choosing the type of base,
make sure it is compatible with your mattress.
Most of our divans are available in various storage options.
Head boards are an optional extra.
-
PLATFORM TOP DIVAN BASES
The
platform top divan gives a firmer, more responsive feel to
the mattress.
It is made of 2 or 3 strong wooden bars that run accross
the length of the base to ensure a strong support. Then a
cardboard top lies on them, to help and spread the support.
- SPRUNG
EDGE DIVAN BASES
The sprung edge version has a layer of springs atop the base
which add a cushioned affect to your mattress. A sprung edge
divan is also said to add to the lifetime of a mattress.
- SLATTED BASES
Slat bases, like platform top, give a firmer feel to the mattress.
The slats can be directly fixed on the frame or on rubber plastics
for a softer feel.
You can also opt for a decorative
bedsteads. Please read our buying guide for bed frames.
•
ADJUSTABLE BASES
Adjustable bases
can be raised at the head and the foot ends (manually
or electrically). They are ideal for those who
like to spend time in bed (to read, watch TV,
relax or have breakfast...) Adjustable mattresses
can be put on any base. They have the ability
to bend to follow the movements of the base.
Here
are the criteria that will help you choose between
different adjustable products:
- The number of sections : 5 sections
will give you more possibility than 3 sections.
It all depends on your needs.
- The speed of your adjustable
bed depends on whether you opt for an electrical
base. The latter one will expand the range of postitioning.
- The support quality, depends
on the structure of the mattress: spring, foam or
latex. None is better than another. Your comfort
depends on your sleeping habits.
-
MANUAL
Manual ajustable beds allow you to raise the head
end of the bed, so you can be in a sitting position.
Legs can also be raised in order to facilitate blood
circulation.
-
ELECTRICAL
Elecrtical adjustable beds offer more freedom in
the choice of positions you are looking for.
•
FUTONS
Futons : a mattress made
after Japanese technique, laying on a wooden frame. This
gives a Zen style to the room.
The mattress folds in half (1 fold accross
the length of the mattress). The mattress is usually
thick (around 20 cm deep) and it can be used for an
everyday usage (although we recommend a real bed for
a daily use).
•
SOFAS AND SOFABEDS
Buying a sofa is a matter of personal design taste,
and sometimes it feels you must make your decision between
dozens of couches available. We will help you narrow your
choice down to a small selection that best suits your
needs.
- SOFABEDS
They are ideal if
you want to save space, or you just want that extra
sleeping space for when you have guests.
The mecanism is made out of 2 folds,
and support the mattress with wood slats or taught fabric.
Mattresses are usually thin, 5 to 6 cm,
so that it can fold properly. Therefore it is not for
an everyday use.
•
BUNK BEDS AND GUEST BEDS
Mattresses for bunk and guest beds are usually
made out of regular foam, because they are designed for children.
Unlike traditional single mattresses (90x190cm), mattresses
for bunk and guest beds are usually a little smaller (width
and length), as well as thinner. We invite you to take all this
information into consideration.
Bunk beds allow to save a lot of space when two people are
sleeping. It is ideal for children, or small student rooms.
Guest beds and Captain beds
have a secondary mattress under the main mattress, that lies
on a folding base, or inside a large drawer that you can pull.
